Hello! First post in the Canadian section! I was wondering if any of you know of a way to narrow the date on this dime:

Don't know anything about dimes but it is the George V series 1911-1936. It isn't the 1911 one because that one was godless.

I remember way back when, I was a youngen, when my Dad had a coin ( silver ) that looked like this he tried Pencil lead...... He would scrape the tip and rub the dust on the surface...If there is any kind of date left it might raise it up... Worth a try

interesting! Yeah, got that it's 1912-1922, 1927-1936. I was hoping there might be other mark of variety that may narrow it.

So, artdio - he would scrape the tip of a pencil on something coarse to produce lead dust, then rub the dust on the surface so that it would catch on any ultra-fine "edges" left? That's a cool idea! I'll see what I can do! =)

According to my book there is no 1922 or 1927. 1912 should only have broad leaves. Figure out the composition- .925 or .800.

OT - Don't mean to hijack

I've always wondered how one could tell the composition like realpenny suggests

drop an 80 and a 925 of approx the same grade and definitely the same type on the same surface you can hear the difference.

That's a good idea. But how would you know which is which?

you drop two identifiable ones first splatto to establish the baseline. Then you match the sound up to your unidentified sample.

Unfortunately, I don't have enough examples! But thank you for the ideas... - They are good!

Canadian_Coins - does the dot mean anything? I haven't seen anything about a dot in my reading...

If it was a real dot dime from 1936 it would be worth a fortune as only five are known. Yours is in too rough a shape to know though.
