I am looking at buying a Trade dollar and I was curious if any of you guys know a safe place to buy one, ebay seems so risky since I am new to collecting. I need this guy for my 7070. Are there any tricks to picking out a fake? thanks Aaron

The biggest piece of advice I can give you, especially if you are new to the series is: Only buy certified(PCGS, NGC, or ANACS). There are a ton of fakes out there.

ebay is pretty tough to beat when it comes to selection (as much as it hurts to admit it! LOL!). If it were me, I would buy a certified one as Johnny suggested above. You can always crack it out of the slab if you want it to go into your album. If you stick with a reputable seller that is located in the U.S., has good feedback, a good return policy, and you pay with PayPal, you will minimize the chances of getting scammed. If you are still hesitant about buying one online, I would suggest buying from a local dealer that you know and trust. Good Luck

Do you just want a Trade dollar for a type set? then an 1877-s or 1878-s would do the job. Definitely stick with one in a top-tier slab unless you are capable of authenticating them. An attractive XF or AU in those dates would not break the bank. Among established dealers, Dick Osburn, Eugene Bruder, and Rich Urich all deal with Trade dollars and are totally trustworthy. On ebay, Typecoin and estatecoinsales are good, to name a couple. I collect them by date, mintmark, and variety, and would be happy to advise you if you spot one you are interested in. Does this place have personal messaging?

I will readily admit that I don't have any experience with Trade dollars (other than I ran across a poor counterfeit one once). However, according to the Numismedia website, it looks like you could probably get a Trade dollar somewhere in the Fine to Extra Fine range depending on the date for the amount of money you want to spend. It looks like all dates start getting pretty expensive at the AU50 level. If you are patient and willing to shop around, I think you could pick up a real nice mid-to-upper grade circulated Trade dollar for $200.

I think that finding a nice VF coin for around 200, one of the S mints from 1874-1878, should not be too hard. Finding an XF one in, say, problem-free NGC or PCGS plastic might prove more of a challenge at that price- but could probably still be done.
