Last night surfing on ebay seeing if I could pick up anything of interest. Along came a auction for a 2005-D Jefferson Buffalo nickel Business Strike Mint State 66. Looked up the slabs certification number on PCGS Certification Verification site it was a $70 coin. Proceeded to place a bid at the last second, low and behold I won the coin for the price of $14.50. I usually don't win these sort of auctions do to being very fur gel with my money. I do have faith that it is genuine, I have dealt with the seller numerous times before on PCGS slab coins. Just thought I let the community in on a bite of good lucky that came my way. Thanks! Rastatodd

Is it certified? The PCGS price guide is usually very overpriced, and not a good resource in the majority of situations.

If your asking if it has been certified say by the CAC the answer is no. What source would you use to come to a conclusion to the coins worth, if not the biggest name in third party grading. Your input please. I know lets send the coin to some company to certify that the CAC is grading the coin correctly after they certified that PCGS graded it correctly! Where does it end?

I think he missed the fact that the coin was slabbed. PCGS' price guide is known far and wide throughout the hobby as being rather wildly overpriced for most issues. Had you done that, you'd know that the price you paid was no better than average for what you got.

Sorry, I missed the part that it had been slabbed. I agree with SuperDave that you did not get a deal.

Well Superdave and Wheatguy after looking into the value of my good deal, I have come to the conclusion that I came out on the short end of the stick. Being proud of the what I thought was a good deal only to be told from this sites "Moderator" and its "Pillar of the Community" that "son it wasn't that good of a deal", makes me feel this isn't the site for me. I go now to learn all I can about this hobby called numismatics. If I do return I'll be sure not to boost of my good fortunes! To all the kind reply's I received from you members thanks so much, I've learned a lot! Thanks, Rastatodd

I don't think their point was to say that you got ripped off at all....You probably paid about what the coin was worth, and there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with that, especially if you happen to enjoy the coin. I think their point was just that the PCGS price guide can be very misleading, especially in this economy. If you're happy with the coin, I think you did just fine.

So you came here just for an ego boost and to brag about what a good buyer you are? If that is the case then this may not be the site for you. If you are looking for a website where you can learn things to make you a better numismatist in an honest (and friendly) atmosphere then this is a good place to be. Sometimes people are blunt with advice, but that isn't the same thing as disparaging you.
No one was attacking you or your acquisition, you were simply getting someone's opinion that you bought a coin for the going rate. When you asked for a better source of information you were given one. If I made a buy that I thought was a great deal but really wasn't I'd be disappointed in myself but happy someone taught me something new that could help me in the future. And it isn't even like you made a bad buy, you got it for a reasonable price.
If you want to share your finds without something like this happening just post a picture of your new acquisition and don't mention the price.

rastatood Here is a example of why that may not have been the really good deal you were thinking. http://app.vendio.com/storefront?vi...ode=1&pnum=5This link shows where you can buy a 2005 mint set for $10.00. With this era mint sets, there would be a good chance that the coins could be in the MS-66 grades or better. Plus you would have all the other coins as well. Of course they would be of the satin finish. But this is just a example. If I looked around I am sure I could find a BU roll for for less than $10. Also when people send in modern coins like this to be graded, they are doing it to try and get a MS 70 grade. Getting anything less and you will see them trying to sell the coins for about the price it cost them to have it graded. There are exceptions. For example: some of the early years for State Quarters. They were made fast and not much was given to quality, so there are a few that have some good value in MS 67 grade or higher. You will hear, buy the coin .. not the slab. This is one of those cases. Now lets turn the coin .. was there a reason you wanted this coin, that we don't know about. Could it be that you are wanting to collect a set of PCGS westward journey nickels. Sometimes knowing the reason .. can justify the purchase.
