Hey Everyone,
This is a question Ive had for a long time. How muc h does it cost to have coins graded and slabbed? I'm think of getting one or 2 graded and slabbed so I'm wondering. Also I'm guessing if you get it slabbed by ANACS, NGC, or PCGS prices fluctiouate?

Thanks alot

correct me if I'm wrong, but I beleve you can get an anual membership to pcgs for $99, and you get 5 coins graded free, plus one "token coin" that is graded MS65 or higher.

you can join NGC for 100 bucks as well and get a MS-68 Silver Eagle and 5 free submissions. But if you are just wanting to submit a few coins that really is throwing away money in my opinion and I would go with ANACS, there is no club to join and I think they have the cheapest submission charges of the Top Three. and it takes the Platinum membership at PCGS to get the free submissions and its 8 not 5

OOPS! I see NGC changed the free coin to a 2006 Clad State Quarter Graded PF 69 Ultra Cameo

For $99 I do not believe that PCGS gives you any free submissions. I think that you have to get the $199 membership and then they give you 8 free submissions.

What about ANA members? Aren't they allowed to submit to NGC by paying only the submission fee? So they don't need to join a club.

That's a good point, ANA members can submit to NGC and only pay submission charges. For a junior membership it's like $20 or so, not a bad deal if you want to a couple of coins. But since the membership gives you 5 free submissions, I'd go with it if you want to submit lots of coins.

Yes Shatsi you can submit to NGC if you are a ANA Member without joining NGC's collector society

fengk I agree, the free earlybird submissions would pay for the joining charges itself because earlybird is 30 bucks a pop

So far I am very happy with ANACSs grading. The grades are correct and the new holders are nice. The only part of their service that I am dissapointed with is their return speed. They make up for late returns with free submissions, so I have many free coin submissions!

Yeah, ANACS has been giving out lots of free submissions lately, sorta makes me want to go and send in a coin, see how long it takes them to grade it, and get a free submission.

OK, someone please tell me if I've got this right. From all the posts I've seen so far, there are only three good 3rd-party graders: ANACs, PCGS, and NGC.

PCGS is the one that is most respected, and a coin with given certain grade will bring a higher price if PCGS graded it than if one of the others graded it. But PCGS is the most expensive, and maybe they grade harder, so your coin might come back tainted with a low grade that will make you lose money on it if you bought for resale.

NGC is cheaper and does just as good a job, but buyers may pay less for a coin of a given grade off of NGC than they will for the same grade coin off of PCGS.

ANACS is cheapest, but for some reason less desireable to buyers, even though everyone thinks they do a fine job. It's a good way to go for a coin you want to keep for yourself. Maybe it's brings less from buyers because ANACS grades easier?

Is this more or less the way it is?
Rest in Peace

Hi Diane! You are correct. Basically they are considered to be "tier one" grading companies. PCGS tends to command the highest re-sale prices. ANAC'S is going through some substantial changes and is experiencing some "growing pains". I still feel that ANACS has the most consistant, if not conservative grading standards. NGC does a good job as well. ICG is sometimes considered in the mix as well and is making inroads into the industry.
As has been pointed out, ANAC'S requires no membership. Remember PCGS and NGC require annual fee's for membership as does the ANA for NGC submissions. I submit to all three, mostly ANACS because they will slab a problem coin where the others send it back in a "body bag" and you still pay for the opinion/service without the encapsulation.

Different coins, values and your personal goals(ie. registry sets} with the coins should/may impact what company you choose. Opinions on this subject are wide and varied and most people have a favorite company. Good luck! Mike

It sounds like you have the basics down.

Each T.P.G. has several different prices though depending on certain things like, say, how quickly you want the coin back or what kind it is or how old, etc. If you want more on submissions check out their web sites.
