Was wondering if I could get some info on how much an effect toning has on the value of a coin. I recently purchased a Morgan on ebay that is deeply toned, but appears UNC. Could someone clue a new guy in on toning? I'll attach the ebay link to the coin as I haven't received it as yet.

Thanks!

I LOVE toning, some people don't, but yes, it does usually affect the grade positively.

BUT, there are three different types of toning, 1.good toning, 2.ugly toning, and 3.fake toning.

good toning is the rainbow colors. ugly toning is black, brown, and other dull colors. fake toning( ) is sometimes easily identified and the coin is more productive in the garbage than anywhere else.

this coin has a mix of 1. and 2.

It really depends on the coin. Look at some monster toned certified Morgans on ebay, and you'll see normal $20 coins going for thousands. There are always big debates on natural and artificial toning.

Your coin appears to have natural toning but looks to be in the AU range. The price you paid was a bit high, about $35 shipped would have been fair. The eye appeal warrants a higher price but that that much to an extent. It really depends on the person, some people love toning and some don't.

Lafaa, toning does not affect grade. Extreme toning will occasionally make a grader bump the grade up a point, but the technical grade is not affected. A blast white MS-65 Morgan will not be a 66 if it has even the nicest of rainbow toning.
