Hello All,

I just bought an 1888 1 Centime coin Congo Free State (pictured here). I'm sure I paid too much because it was from ebay. But I was getting a little frustrated in trying to fill that 'hole' in my OFEC. Anyway, I'm a glutton for punishment so if anyone has a recent Krause that has this listed, I would appreciate knowing what value is given. I would probably put this at XF for condition but if others have a differing opinion I would love to hear that.

thank you alganbagerap. I guess I didn't do too bad after all. I would assume minimal movement in value for this coin from 2006 and now.

Does anyone have a thought on where they would grade this coin. I know it is tougher from just a picture but I would appreciate your input. I need to learn to do this better and hearing from some others helps

That's a hole in my OFEC collection that I haven't filled yet. Current Krause values aren't any different from what alganbagerap stated. Your pictures make the coin difficult to grade, but I'm thinking something in the XF range would be reasonable.

thanks snowman. I had one opinion of AU-50 and then XF. I'm good with either and would probably lean toward XF because I would be more conservative.

I'm still trying to get all of this grading stuff down.

How could the pictures have been different to make a better judgement on grading?

Bigger pics would have been helpful. I can't tell whether the beading in the star is wear or a product of the strike. There also appear to be contact marks on the letters and beading, but it is tough to tell. Don't get me wrong though. I would happily add this coin to my collection if the price was right.

wow, I have a lot to learn. I just thought it was a nice example. I did get it for a good price.

I need to learn more about how to tell the difference between wear and strike. And I do think they are some contact marks but the picture highlights them more than you can actually see with the naked eye. It is a pretty coin in my opinion and since it is going into my binder I get the opinion..... LOL
