I have the opportunity to get 5 lbs of mixed world coins, the mix is said to be 1800's to preset with the majority being 40 years or older.. No other information other then that, do you guys think its worth the price? I have very very little experience with world coins, but wouldn't mind adding some to my collection.

5 lb. is approx. 240 coins considering each one is worth .25 than that would be $60

From that description, it's way too much money. Poundage is readily available from ebay at $5-8/lb. Mostly '60s and newer, often with a few worn/damaged 1800s thrown in to validate the '1800s to present' claim.

Without knowing the source or seeing the lot, that's all I would consider paying.

I was just digging through my local shop's "bulk world coin" bin today. They sell them for 25c each or 5/$1...not sure of the poundage, but if Adam_E's approximation is close, I wouldn't buy that lot. I can get 350 world coins AND I get to pick them for the same $70...way more than the 240 in a blind mix. Of my quick dig today, I saw many from the early-mid 1900s (20s-50s) and then of course a bunch more newer than that. I don't know if you can find the same sort of deal near you, but it might be worth the time to look around and see what others are offering...especially when buying a blind mix.

If I could sell 5 lbs of Dark siders for $70 a time I would be a rich man. I usually get around half that for bulk lots and that's with plenty of coins from the early 1900's
