Hi I would like to know the significance of a Russian coin that I came across. I was told the image is of Rasputin and the last Czar and the dates stipulated on the back are from 1613 to 1913 so I assume it is some sort of commemoration to a period. If anyone knows the significance of the history I would be very interested as there is a sect of my family descending from that period and region.

This coin was minted in 1913 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty. It depicts the first Romanov-tsar, Mihail Fjodorovits and the last russian emperor Nicholas II who actually wasn't a Romanov but a Holstein-Gottorp. There are two different versions of this coin, one with higher and one with lower relief. High relief variety is one of the most common coins of Russian Empire, and and uncirculated specimen is valued about 40-60 USD. Uncirculated low relief may be over $100 due its smaller mintage (50000 pcs). Price could(and should) be higher, but because the variants aren't widely known it stays relatively low.

Here's the coin that turtleoverhead is talking about. I assume your coin looks more or less like this one?

While Rasputin was very close to the Russian royal family (or rather Czarina Alexandra), he was greatly disliked by Nicholas himself and by all the court - just look at the (in)famouse story of them trying to kill Rasputin. Anyway, nobody would ever approve his image on anything official, let along the currency.

Hi thanks for all the great info, how would you know the difference between a high and low relief coin? The picture is not that of my coin as soon as I work out how to upload a pic i'll do so. The image has two people on it looking rather regal.
