Who here regularly attends auctions? Or, if it makes a difference, auctions by the Canadian Numismatic Company.

Generally when these big auctions come up, I send a list to my local coin dealer of things I want and then let him bid for me. After I saw the prices realized for some items at Torex in February, I really wished I had attended so I could have bought some.

As such, I am interested in attending the TL Coin Auction next month in Hamilton. Can anyone tell me how it works? Do I just have to be there and start bidding away when the items are shown, or do I need to be pre-approved? Do I pay for my items while there or after? If I can pay for them while there, can I pick them up at the same time?

Any insights would be appreciated!

Hi jg86, I attend local auctions here regularly, at least once a month, and each auction has it's own certain procedural elements to it, defined by the hosting club or organization.

In general, the buyer registers for the "paddle" or numbered sign so the auctioneer can list you down as the winner.

The items are usually laid down on a table for your inspection. Take note of the # of the item you like and it's TIPO price or starting bid price in the auction list provided.

With your numbered sign, wait for the auction to start and just raise it up when you hear the price acceptable to you for an item you want.

just be alert with your ears, the auctioneer has a way of increasing prices! observe the other bidders for a couple of items before you plunge in.

Good luck!

Is this event only an auction or will there be dealer booths there as well? I emailed the organizer and she doesn't seem to care to write me back
