Hey everyone,

I was reading a several topics, and I noticed a few members mentioning certification. How does this work exactly? Is there an organized institution that certifies Coin, etc? If so, how exactly is this process executed? I know this maybe a very basic question, but I'm new to this very interesting past-time! Great to be here! Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Cheers!

By "certification" people normally mean "third party grading".

The concept behind "third party grading companies" is simple: for a fee, they will grade your coins for you. They're supposed to be independent, with no vested interest or bias either for you or against you. You're paying them for their honest opinion of your coins. You also have to pay for shipping your coins there and back again. The coins are sealed in air-tight tamper-proof cases, so that when you choose to sell those coins, the buyer can have confidence that the coin is indeed in the condition that the certificate claims it to be.

From what I understand, there are two recognised Canadian TPGs, CCCS and ICCS. There are several American ones, notably PCGS, NGC and ANACS. There's also one in Britain, CGS. There are also dozens of less reputable companies and "basement slabbers" who try to fool you into believing that their coins are independently graded when they are not.

It is against ebay policy to sell coins on US ebay described as "certified" if they haven't been certified by one of the major recognized American TPGs. Doing so can get your auctions pulled.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Hello,

Thanks a lot, I really appreciate your response. I wonder if there is a location in Ottawa or Montreal? I hate the idea of shipping my coins out. lol I'm sure it is secure. I'll have to do some more research from here. Again, thank you. Have a great one!
