Still need 1932-S / 1936-S / 1937-D / 1937-S and 1939-S for a complete (non proof) set. With exception of the 32 d/s I will have done this set from Circulation / Basket quarters (at spot price) only.

Wow! Congratulations. I'm working on an MS set but have a few rough ones lying around and was thinking of making a set out of melters. Great job.

Thats a risky move in my opinion. The pictures are bad and the D and S have been added on quite a number of Phil. examples. I suggest getting a professional opinion once you get the coin.

^ about half way down there are a couple examples of counterfeits

On the other hand if its legitimate, great find!

Nice buy ...

What would you say in the average grade that you got out silver boxes ..

I am guessing ... hoping in 50's and 60's maybe some AU/UNC's .. I just started a 1932 to 1998 set

most of the 50s and 60s were VF+ a few XF+ and a 1964 AU. the 30s were what ever I could get em in. so a few are G but most are VG - F. Got em all at about $3 a piece. so cant complain.

Mattbrowning, yea I saw that episode of pawn-stars also, but with my budget, $50 is a low risk. Auction doesn't "feel" like a knowing scam, so if it is counterfeit... chances are the seller was duped also.

Yea, even if it is fake, its a relatively cheap mistake. Not like I bought a 1916-D Merc. : /

I am not saying it is fake in anyway .. pictures are not good enough to tell either way.

And if by chance it was .. you could send it back for refund.

I would have bought it for that price, with no problem

So I got it today. To me, the amount of dirt around the MM seems consistent with other areas of the reverse. It also appears to have the same type and level of wear of the rest of the coin.

This all could just mean its an old fake.

Only thing that irks me is the angle of the top of the D in relation to the bottom of the branch.

What do you all think? I only Paid $50.00 for it, so not a big loss if it is counterfeit and I can probably send it back.

I'm not a pro on the look of the MM but here's a picture of one with similar wear. http://www.cointalk.com/t12858/

Relevant quotes from the cointalk discussion.

"Another point in the favor that this coin is real is that the Counterfeit guides talk how there is like a pond that the mintmark sits in...under 10x this show that clearly...I would think that the reason yours and mine don't look alot of alike is because that the RPM would make the MM look wider and such...the points of the D look funny and larger."

Ianmprice

Sorry I did not get back to this thread.

I am no expert on this coin, and I have been trying to not say anything negative on post.

But it does look a little funny. Do you have a good dealer local that you can have take a look at it.

I think if it was mine, and there was a return policy. I would think about sending it back.
Unless someone could tell you it is real. This is just my opinion. I hope some others have something to say about this.

I want to make sure you know. I think it would be great if this turned out to be real.

I keep looking at that MM and it just seems like it could be added.
