Greetings Canadian Friends ......

I found tonight in a USA nickel roll search what I believe might be a Proof Strike 2001 Canadian nickel.

A few minutes on Google did not develop any information for me if you even minted a Proof nickel in 2001! I stand prepared to be fully embarrassed when the first expert writes back and says no such coins were minted.

Anyways ...... I come across your nickels on occasion in USA bank rolls and this example jumped out at me for three reasons obvious to my eye at first glance ..... Mirror surfaces (with expected contact marks from circulation), Bold Strike and a 'Square' edge to the planchet.

A few really poor photos for you ......

I would appreciate any opinions about this being a Proof strike Canadian nickel.

Thanks

David

Looks like a business strike to me.
If it is any consolation - it is the cupro-nickel 2001 (mintage 30,000,000) and not the far more common plated steel (136,000,000)

In 2001, the mint was experimenting with new processes.
It is very common to find 2001 cupro-nickel business strikes with that mirrored surface.

I think this best represents a proof coin.
Enlarge in on the obverse and note the frosted appearance.

That's a Silver proof though. Highly exaggerated cameo. The coin the OP posted is reminiscent of a BU strike from a specimen set except they were all apparently P type (plated) in 2001.

Many thanks for the kind replies ......

Soooo ... what I have is a 2001 cupro-nickel business strike with mirror surfaces as a result of your mint 'experimenting' that year. Mintage appx 30,000,000.

I say this is a lovely coin in hand ..... and has been safely stored in a 2x2 to join some of my favorite USA roll-found nickels ......

I appreciate all the replies.

You will find some interesting variety in the surfaces of Canadian nickels. 1991 for example is commonly seen with what I can only describe as "soft, satiny fields" which are quite attractive.

Canadian proofs all have an ultra deep cameo contrast. Americans commonly refer to our proof-like coins as "proofs", and are in error in doing so. The same word means different things in the two countries. Canadian proof decimal coinage was not produced until 1981.
