I came across what I believe is a Three Cent coin. I have look at every coin on line but I cannot find one that looks like the one I have. One side has the star shield like the other coins I have seen. The other side has an engraved C R interlinked. Any one knows of this?

Hi gwhutch

Welcome to the forum !!

Can you post a pic ? and do I understand that the CR is inset into the coin and not in relief on the coin ?

The reverse of the Three Cent coin should Have a Large C with three pillar style bars within the curve.

A pic would be most helpful !!

Lovely coin you found, May I ask where you found it?

If its genuine then:

G-4--------$24
F-12-------$32
EF-40------$95
MS-60------$325

But I think you should post a picture of it.

Sounds to me like an ordinary 3¢ coin that's been "vandalised".

It might be a "love token" - where someone filed off the usual reverse design and carved their initials there. Don't know why they'd use a tiny 3 cent for it, though. Unless they were secret lovers...

If its been engraved like that, then the coin is considered damaged and will usually be worth less than an undamaged one to a collector, unless the history behind the person (or people) who did the "vandalism" is known.

yep, I was gonna say its a Love Token, I have seen Seated dime love tokens just like that. Especially if it looks like a jewelers doing instead of someone just scratching the initials in the coin which from your description I am guessing it looks fairly nice like this Seated dime Love Token

Welcome to the forum!

I really can't give an opinion until I see pictures.
