most folks give the best 'that's interesting' they can give. some will go through them but it is when I tell them that I can buy a can of Pepsi in 250ish countries, then they really get interested... LOL

I think "what coin do I have that is worth the most", is the most frequent asked questions.
But sometimes they ask what type of coins do I collect. I say quarters, and that I am having trouble finding a 1975 quarter. I ask them to go through all the coins they have at home and I will give them a $100 for any 1975 quarter they have.

I usually do not share my numismatic interests, but when I do, the first question always seems to be "Really?" They doubt me, almost like I am making it up! Then I start my rant on how our government is wasting money minting the cent. Then I tell them how they could save money by replacing the dollar notes with the dollar coins. They doubt me no more.

Typically, the conversation goes something like this:
.So Jim what do you like to do with your spare time.
. Well, I collect coins. Started as a young man, quit for a while but now I collect.........
And right about now they develop a glazed fish eye look and fall to sleep.
My experience is that unless they are collectors themselves, they only listen to be polite. Also, talking about your collection only puts you in harms way, PEOPLE TALK. I caught my sister telling someone about some of my expensive coins and had to lecture her about security. It is just not worth it. That is what you my friends are for, sharing.

I used to get an incredulous " you collect coins?" I'm not sure if it was the fact that it was coins, or that it was me, which made them so very disbelieving. For some reason it was even worse when I was in my twenties, as if somehow young women couldn't possibly collect coins!

Sorry I did not see your reply until now .. I ask them search their big jar of change for a 1975 quarter ..
Because they did not make a 1975 quarter. (in 75 and 76 only had the bicentennial quarters)

But I rarely ever tell anyone. In fact, I have friends who I have known for years who still do not realize that I am a numismatist. In general I have received overwhelmingly negative reactions from the few who have found out. Often they say things like "why would you want to do that(?)" or "I bet you could get a lot of money if you sell them," which indicates that they have no appreciation for the significance of the coin. This point leads me to the fact that I am always quite puzzled by people who understand that rare coins can be valuable but have not clued into the fact that they are valuable because there are people out there who want and appreciate them. On that note, I shall leave you with this just baffling quote: Me: "A silver dollar made at the Carson City mint is worth a good amount of money if in very nice condition. Guy: "Well, that',like, only if you take it to a mint or something. You can't just walk into a grocery store and say this silver dollar is worth $500 and buy $500 worth of groceries with it."

I am often asked if it is an expensive hobby. I point out that 'expensive' is relative. I go on to say that, in fact, I began collecting coins because my previous hobby of collecting ex-wives was far more expensive... For some reason, the topic of conversation usually abruptly shifts.
