I asked an ebay coin seller how he can be selling the Hot Springs P & D quarter bank rolls both dates April 20th 1st release. I told him I was there and they only had the D mint quarters at the opening ceremony. He emailed me back stating he gets both P & D mints a week before they are released is this crap or what can't be? If so this is not right some getting these before the official release date I should call the US Mint customer service center and ask about this.

Well I called the US Mint and was told that the coins are not released early to anyone. So I asker who to talk to about people claiming they get these early she said all you can do is write the US Mint Headquarters PO Box. This makes me mad if some dealers are actually getting coins before the rest of us can I am writing US Senator about this issue. You think the US Mint would be concerned about people selling items and also stating they come with an official COA. Guess the US Mint is only concerned about making money like everyone else. What makes me mad is these ebay people state they get the coins before the general public and we still can't get any at the banks. JKHIHUO*U&(*&(^*%&*^%&^*^^#^%$#%$#^&%& I do not get mad easy but this has me boiling.

I think for items like the Presidential dollars banks get them early but are not supposed to release them till they go on sale at the mint. I'm pretty sure a dealer would have to get them from a bank and banks as I understand it can't even order these.

Quite honestly it wouldn't surprise me at all if a large volume dealer (or ten) got preferential treatment from the mint on these and other items. They probably pay a different rate too.

I believe I have heard that some large dealers do get theirs early. If I am not mistaken there was a topic on here about the television sellers already having their coins graded and selling them before a certain coin was supposed to be released but don't remember what coin it was. I do remember that they were selling the 2010 Cent on ebay way before they were supposed to be released at the ceremony everyone was waiting for

So dealers can order these directly from the mint but banks can't?

Well ebay coin sales and the home shopping channels are ruining the coin collecting hobby and creditability.
They are driving this hobby down the tubes.
I have written a letter to my Federal senator abut this unfair treatment and releases of our nations coinage.
We are equal and should be treated so.

You are right Bruce. Those entities are at least damaging the credibility of the collecting hobby. They sell common, highly minted stuff as rare and over priced objects. Then when the unsuspecting (uneducated) buyers go to trade or sell it - they find they paid 3-10 times the value.
I love when they use the "they aren't making any more of these, production has stopped." type lines........lol.

It still makes no sense to me banks can't order these but private individuals can. They must have to pay some premium.

I saw on the news that the banks can order these but most banks are tired of all these coins it cost time money for them to be he US Mints distribution network. In away understand but also if they are a branch of the federal reserve they should have to issue the new coinage to we the people but I can see there point. That is why these should be available under the direct ship program all the new coins for that matter that would stop all the TV sales and ebay crap also.

Who cares about getting new stuff as soon as it comes out? Isn't this a hobby of patience and reasoning. Why pay 2-3X what something is worth, just to have it the year it comes out. I didn't buy any 2009 coinage and its starting to pop up now in circulation. Most of the time in MS. I'd be willing to bet the same will happen for 2010, 2011, ...

I am confused here- is this seller auctioning P&D rolls with a generic bank wrapper or are these the two roll sets with special wrapper and COA sold by the Mint? Either way, these coin have been out for a month now so I am not sure what the point is As for getting coins before the "official release", it happens frequently. Look at 2010 cents turning up in Puerto Rico in early January when the "official release" was Feb 12 in Springfield IL. I have seen people on this forum post that they got certain Prez dollars from their local bank before their official release date. Of course, this is not the same as getting a Mint-only item before its release date and I have never heard of that happening before.

What I find interesting is the prevalent attitude that the United States Mint should conduct its business primarily to satisfy the desire of coin collectors to fill holes in albums or vacant space in a Safe Deposit Box, rather than primarily satisfy the need for the nations circulating coinage. And that it should all be done gratis. No profit. And that, somehow, a free market where various sellers offer these items at a price of their choosing is "ruining" the hobby of coin collecting.
It reminds me of a little lesson I learned a long time ago about buying a car, and it applies here as well;
"If you don't like the price, be prepared to get up and walk away. There's always another one."
It's served me well a couple of times.
