I received this coin today. It weights 27 grams. Looks doesn't like a fake. But the direction of laurel leaves on the edge pointed to the same direction instead of reversing the directions in the half way. Is it a fake? Swamperbob, any comments on this coin?

On Mexico and Guatemala pillars up until 1762-1763 the leaves can all facing one way, all facing the other way or be 1/2 and 1/2 each direction. From 1764 they always run in one direction. Take a picture of the edge for us and lets look at it. Nice "61", that is the year they redid the globes and made them much more defined. There are 12 known varieties for this date/assayer including a rare one with the tip of the cross below the "I". My favorite (and I wish I had one) is the variety with the Imperial and Royal crowns reversed.

I am also curious how its laurel leaf edge would look, because a lot of 8 reales counterfeits surfaced out at the market nowadays, so I also would like to be familiarized with the correct edges.

This coin (above) looks somewhat different from this coin:

I'm not sure what to make of it... Unless they changed the way they minted coins in those 8 years.

If the weight is within tolerance, it should be genuine

Precise weight to 1/10th of a gram is needed along with a Specific gravity. So far, there are no forgeries in silver that meet the correct tolerance. Typical forgeries will be off in weight.
