I was digging through about 20+ 1964 PL sets to get a nice one out for the postcard contest and I came across this one. I cut it out of the set and stuck it in a capsule to help slow down the toning. I shot it on an angle to reveal the toning - likely caused by pinholes or possible contamination when it was packaged. For some reason I find it attractive like this and I'll put it with keep pile. I've always really liked the design on this coin. I think I've seen too many canoes and animals.  |

Nice coin. Personally I prefer the classic voyageur design to all the commemorative dollars. In fact I'm not much of a fan of any of the 1967 designs.  |

Yeah... the canoe... I am so sick of that. It just seems to epitomize the fact that we built most of this country by putting up trading posts to fleece the natives. Sorry , not trying to get political.
I'm not so keen on the 67 artwork but I like the thought behind the pieces - their symbolism if you will. It beats the cartoon lynx kittens in that other thread on the twoonie though - at least the 1967 animals can exist outside of Japanese anime...I wonder if other countries laugh at us
I guess this all just speaks to the point that most people prefer classic coinage. I too would prefer they stick to making standard circulation coins. I look at a quarter these days and I can't even tell what country it comes it from without scrutiny. "Oh that's the Canada 2007 Celebration of the Aardvark coloured 25 cent piece with a raised A". Sigh.

I like the voyageur coin - reminds me of Algonquin - and yes a lot of early monuments didn't tell the whole story.
Yes, the quarters are crazy in North America. Both mints are making a killing off them so I doubt they won't stop until it doesn't make them money.

+1 on the classic coinage. Somehow we got by on just five commemorative reverse designs between 1935 and 1967 and just on dollars!
Wouldn't that be a great idea, leave the commemoratives to the dollar coins and let us enjoy the great designs we have on the rest.

I have to say that for all the flaws our money may have, I've seen a lot worse. I'll take a canoe or beaver over a dead president and stone building any day of the week.

That is a great coin indeed. I need to find out where I can get a whack of dollars and fifty cent pieces without paying coin dealer's premiums all the time.
