They're expensive. People say they give you what they advertise but you might want to try and shop around first. If money isn't an issue you're good to go but if you want good value find a decent dealer or try a coin show.
They do have some good deals for first time customers though so make sure you take advantage of that. I got five 2006 A.S.E.s for $8.95 each with free shipping earlier this year. They enroll you in the "coins on approval" program on those deals hoping to make their money there. If you don't like the prices you cancel, no problems. Those introductory offers are good but the rest is just too overpriced IMO.

I repeat myself from an older post: quote: I've purchased two of Littleton's specials:
- 7 Unc Sacs for $9.95 (one per year) plus a folder for $1.95 -- free s&h - 10 Unc Westword Journey nickels (complete P&D set 2004-2006) for $2.95 -- free s&h
A couple of notes: - It's true that they start to sell you coins on approval, but I cancelled that immediately. - The coins all came in plastic bags marked MS60. As far as I can tell, this is a very accurate grade -- the Sacs maybe had one Gem BU coin among them. As you would expect, the nickels were nicer. - Looking at the catalogue for most of their stuff, it makes the Red Book look like a discount catalogue.
A lot of people like to knock Coin Vault as overpriced, and I don't disagree. But the "leading numismatic catalogue" that they constantly favorably compare their prices to is Littleton, as far as I can tell. This week CV was selling the most recent eight clad proof sets for $558. That compares to $454 in the Red Book and $780 in my Littleton catalogue (if I added correctly).

Back when Robert Chambers of "Coin Vault " fame was not "wearing" as much gold as he sells, I e-mailed him asking what "leading publication" he was always quoting prices from. His answer, as texasnick has already figured out was...."Littletons" Many of us purchased from Littletons when we first started collecting, and some folks continue to do so because it is,well, easy. Littleton's has two distinct faces. They are very big in high end coins with investment collecting, and the other face is the one most of us know, the inside of envelope flaps, magazines and direct mailings. Yes, they are very good with grading but are very, very pricy. Again as texasnick already pointed out they can make CV look like a bargain!!! Mike

As mentioned above their intro. offers are pretty good but their regular prices are through the roof. They have been around for a while and their grading can be trusted. The way they do makes getting the coins very convienant.

On a positive note, I bet Littletons is responsible for getting many people started in the hobby. Many many years ago, I remember waiting for my little coin bags to come in for my inspection every month. You could specify an area of interest and they would send coins of that type. Mike

I would have to agree with that littleton has been there for us for quite awhile, and supplied many collectors needs

I'm not necessarily endorsing their prices, but Littleton does demonstrate that there is a measurable value to quality and consistency of service. It's certainly easier to justify their prices than, for instance, an ebay seller hawking NNC slabs at PCGS prices.

I receive several catalogs in the mail from coin companies, and often said catalogs contain beautiful coin reproductions and equally beautiful holders, frames, etc. It's great advertising, and gets many people to buy. Over the years, after I received my orders I sit back and realized the holders and frames were more valuable, or a greater selling point than the coins.
Anyway, Littleton...
An honest company.
Slightly to moderately overpriced.
Beware of the "approvals," because you will be spending considerable time shipping coins back to them.
Finally, the company undoubtedly has started many an individual on the road to becoming a collector.

I've got the impression that there are some good quality buys and some things to stay away from... Still can't wait to get their catalog.
