Hi,

I'm expanding my coincollection with British colonial coins.
I think I have 40 of them now and I am looking for a good catalog for these coins which includes some background information if possible.

best regards,

Hi and welcome to the forum. Hope we can help.

I'm not aware of any recent catalogues that specifically list just British Empire / Commonwealth coins. There were several such books printed back in the 1960s and 1970s when collecting the British Commonwealth was a popular theme. You can pick these up second-hand, but they won't include modern issues and the pricing will be way out of date.

The Krause catalogues of world coins are the only all-in-one-book resource you're going to find. Krauses are, however, one book per century, and there's an awful lot in them that aren't British Commonwealth.

Your only other option, especially if you want more detailed information about each country, is to buy the national catalogues used by the locals in each country. The larger countries like Australia, Canada, India, Malaya etc. all have such catalogues readily available. Books from smaller countries like Mauritius or Guyana might be hard to find or non-existent.

Spink's has a good British catalog. Coins of England and the United Kingdom, 45th Edition, Standard Catalogue of British Coins. It goes back to medieval - and their prices are much more true-to-life than Krause.

I'm sure Amazon, Barnes and Noble or Borders has a ready copy

Check this page for other books which may be of interest: http://www.spink.com/departments/books.asp
