Last I checked (two wks. ago) they had 56.00 of gold in 'em.

I wouldn't buy it. You could find an in tact one for probably 1.5-2X what he is asking for that one, and it would easily be worth the premium. Now if that hole wasn't right where the mint mark would be we may be having a different conversation. I'd happily buy an 1850C or 1850D for $100 even with a hole! But without a mint mark visible we have to assume it is the least valuable of that year, a plain 1850.

minus about 5% because of the gaping hole! Personally, I would pass. I think you should be able to get them much closer to melt.

Melt is $56.96 according to my calculator, I wouldn't pay that much of a premium for a damaged 1.6 gr coin, I'd buy a 1/10th
