I saw this listing...

http://cgi.ebay.com/1901-S-Barber-Q...em3eff990e46

I'd be scared to buy a raw one since I do not know enough about how to authenticate these. There are more counterfeits out there than the genuine article.

It did make me wonder though...does anyone on here have one of these? If so, please post some pics...I'd love to see it!

My father bought one out of an Empire Coin catalog in the early 1980'S for $1100 (I was just a young child then!). He said it was a solid F-12. He sold it about 6 months later for $1500 for a down payment on a house. Needless to say, he often wishes he still had the same coin!

Edited to add: By the way, I don't have one. I just thought maybe I could drool all over someone else's

I've got one that is graded FR02 by PCGS. My grandmother bought me this coin when I was 12 at coin show for $400 and it was raw. I submitted it last year and was relieved that it turned out to be genuine. I don't see anything about the one on ebay that screams out counterfeit, but I don't think I would take a chance on it.

Those are terrible pictures and no closeup of the MM. I'd stay very far away.

You have to wonder why the seller did not pay the $60-$75 to get this coin authenticated by a TPG. Even if the coin were in a problem (Genuine) slab, the coin would bring a much higher sale price than it will raw. The grey sheet bid price for a 1901-S in Good is $4,500 and he is willing to part with it for as low as $1,250. It doesn't add up.

Yep, I agree with you, Pinenut.

nolawyer, That is a really attractive example! It has really nice original looking color.

Reminds me of those Mastercard commercials...

1901-S Barber quarter...$400.00
Memories of going to the coin show with grandma...priceless

Agreed, IF I had a coin like that I was trying to sell, I'd definitely have it graded, no question about it

I asked that question (about not slabbing a valuable coin) to a person I met who found a 1870CC Seated Liberty quarter while metal detecting. He sold it on ebay raw. He said the coin was in AG condition. The justification he gave was that he doubted anyone would make an AG3 counterfeit. Also, he knew it was real because he found it out in the California desert in an abandoned settlement of that period. If the buyer wanted to send it in to get slabbed they could and he'd refund their money if it wasn't genuine.

I thought he was crazy for not getting it slabbed, but the joke was on me. RedBook value for a G4 is $3750, he got nearly double that and as I said he coin was probably AG3.

j_h_s,
I'm watching it too and I think you may be right. I found a couple of really cool articles on authenticating these quarters. Only two sets of dies were used to make these coins.

I'm thinking the "S" on the suspect coin looks too clear to be on an AG/G coin. According to those articles, that's a big red flag.

ANY key date coin of this caliber must be certified by one of the "big 3" TPG's. Don't take any chances purchasing raw unless you know the diagnostics of a genuine specimen.

Thank you. I was lucky to have such a generous grandmother. In addition to her generosity, I owe a lot to her boredom at that coin show. I think she thought a major purchase was the only was she was going to get me out of the coin show:)
