I have come across this circulated Jefferson War Nickel slabbed in a PCGS holder that states "Sample" with certification number 12345678.

PCGS-

I've never seen a PCGS holder labeled "Sample". Does anybody know what this means ...... is the holder itself a sample, or is the coin a sample .... or what?

I would snatch that holder up if you don't already own it.

yep, they give those out at coin shows to show people what their slabs look like. Some people collect them some people bust them open and spend the pocket change in the holders which makes the ones who collect them happy

I would think that the older ones would have collectable value.

Great link fioti .... Thanks for that!

This particular example is up for auction on on E-Pray.

If it ends 'cheap' I might throw in a bid.

The coin itself appears to be a rather ugly VF 1945-P Jefferson with enough rim damage to be declared 'ungradable'..... worth melt value and little else.

I suppose bidding on this would be a true violation of "Buy the Coin not the Slab".

I do not think the rims are damaged, it appears to be overlap from excess slab plastic. Odd that it is just a well worn circ coin though I have purchased almost all of my sample slabs, the only exception being the then-new NGC edge view holder that I got at a St Louis coin show complete with a Missouri State Quarter. I have five or six PCGS sample slabs, all of mine contain MS-64 silver Roosies. The best one is the doily label that I got for 4 bucks-

any doily label sample or otherwise for 4 bucks is a steal no matter what coin is in the slab
