Here is a coin that was never made.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...280003658079

I don't bid much on these - but I like them because of the simple fact that they never actually existed.

The Mexico City mint used assayer initials JJ in that year not PI - so you can either chose to believe it was an error or the simpler solution that it is a forgery. The only issue is - Contemporary or Modern? A Contemporary forgery would be very valuable but a modern fake is a few dollar item.

I thought that I would use this one to point out the obvious - that you bid on coins that were known to have actually existed.

Even in the world of counterfeit collecting you typically know which combinations were actually made and which combinations are modern fabrications.

Do you have an opinion as to whether this is a contemporary copy or a modern fake? If so, why?

My opinion - Modern Chinese - why because of the mix of Mint and Assayer initials used - the style of the bust and the toning. It is only a gut feel but the Mo PI combination is not listed by anyone I know as a contemporary combination. I would not venture such a high bid to find out for sure.

If you feel it is a modern fake, then it probably is. I think your gut instinct on these is better than some of the resources out there.
