Basically focus on an era and/or geographic area. I've got a friend that has been collecting world crowns of this period and has succesfull at it.

Consider using The Standard Catolog of World Coin (offered for the 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th century, but expensive). Also Whitman's Modern World Coins 1850-1964. The COIN ATLAS is great, this covers ancients to the modern. (nice images and good fall back reference)

Books can be found inexpensively, just look.

Try local coin clubs and coins shows (I personally don't like the ANA's and other similar mega shows-- this'll be a another topic.)

I just started collecting and this topic fits in well with my current status. I don't yet know what I want to collect. One of the coin shops within reasonable distance has a foreign coin bucket that the owner has let me sit and look through. I probably went through 20 lbs of coins or so. I picked through and came home with around 120 or so that interested me. My next task is to go through them coin by coin and see what I have. Most of them are European coins from the WWII era with a few WWI era coins and a few Soviet era coins from Russia/USSR. I tend to enjoy the "history" aspect as much as I do the coins themselves, so I have been having a great time just looking.

I basically picked out everything pre 1947 that I came across. Any thoughs/advice for me at this point. Should I be digging through the "coin bucket?" Maybe I should ask if I should be buying from the coin bucket. I only spent $14. I figured that amount wasn't too bad for the ability to hold many different types of cois in my hands and "get to know them" while trying to narrow down my collectiing focus. I don't know.

fcrazo The advice is sound for someone who has a little knowledge of what is available. It is necessary to FOCUS before you can become proficient at the details. The shotgun approach used by Nazarene is probably better for a novice who has no idea what is available. But as long as you are in this mode of buying a wide range DON'T SPEND TOO MUCH.

But whatever you end up doing, you need to KNOW what you want and you need to be able to positively identify an original before you spend money you can't afford to lose. Novices get tricked all the time. That is why I stress repeatedly the old adage "buy the book before the coin".
