Now that I got everyones attention with the subject heading and exclaimation mark, has anyone found one yet?
I just went through a whole coffee can of recent 1 cents and I didn't find any...nada.
I imagine its only a matter of time before they surface, as by rights they should be magnetic anyway.

I think I heard someone say the mint sets have magnetic cents. But please bring a magnet along to your post office before blowing your money on it!

Also, I wouldn't be surprised if we see some in circulation by the end of 2010.

Yea thats the thing. I got the 2010 prooflike set and its magnetic all right. I'm like most other people, I'm going to pull it out of circulation or if push comes to shove, just buy that single coin from a dealer.

Are these considered a waste of money? I like the idea of them. 2010 is the first I've purchased and I'm thinking about trying to get sets from past years

No -- I was kidding for the most part. In fact, there are some real treasures that can be found in certain mint sets. The 2010 magnetic might become one, who knows!?

sorry - really don't want to hijack this topic - out of curiosity is the 2007 curved 7 dime one of these treasures?

I finally got around to checking my Mint set. the penny is magnetic and, like you, I haven't found a magnetic coin in circulation yet.

splatto: Good news about the magnetic cent. And, you scored your 50 cent piece for 2010 as well.

Some of the giftware sets also contain pieces that are collectible. I have a couple of the 2007 versions here (one congratulations the other holiday) and one has a magnetic penny, the other doesn't.

The bonus in these sets to me is that they are circulation strikes, not NBU. You can dig through a lot of rolls of loonies or twoonies before you get a super gem but the coins in these sets seem to be really gently handled. I mean the coloured quarters usually bring ten or more on ebay because of the super low mintage ( think the fireworks version is less than 10,000 units) so you can defray the acquisition cost that way. they also contain 50 cent pieces.

I've picked up mine from buying lots but I see them in the post office all the time.
