You do know what you have in your collection right? I'd be certain to take the time to go through it, you said you're no hurry, do you own DD, and I don't think I'd leave a collection with an individual I didn't know, just sayin'

Welcome - my only addition to what has been said is to photograph your collection prior to leaving it with anyone. That and continue to search for more information or 2nd opinions. Depending on what you have, you may find many buyers here.

I will second the motion of getting more than one opinion and also take a GOOD photo of every coin you take and leave. Many novices have been taken by the Ol' Switch a Roo as some even on this forum has experienced.Good luck on what ever decision you make.

Thanks all for the advice - lots of good suggestions in here.
We do know roughly what's in the collection - my wife has been through all of it. The problem is that there are probably somewhere between 1000 and 2000 coins in the collection - and that doesn't include the bulk rolls. Documenting the collection with photographs would take a very, very long time. My wife has said she'd get on this board (and the PCGS board) and post a rough outline of what we have - hopefully that will help. The only problem is that I can't see a way for us to describe the condition of all the coins.
Let me also clarify something a little. A lot of you are probably assuming that we're a couple of novices who are wanting to dump our collection onto the first dealer we hear about. That's not quite true. Well, we are novices, but the other part isn't true :-) We had someone we trust implicitly recommend someone, and that someone led us to this George fellow. I wanted to see if we could get in touch with people who have dealt with him in the past. If several people came in the thread and said "Yep, dealt with him, he's A-okay and will shoot you straight as an arrow" then we would probably drive over there next week and see what he has to say. However, if we can't find anyone who's dealt with him, then we will proceed with much more caution, and may forget about him alltogether. We just want to know if anyone knows the guy.
Whatever we do, please know that we will proceed with the utmost caution. This is a family collection, and we have a great deal of respect for it. Consequently we won't do anything stupid.

Also, it was made clear to us that if we wish, we can sit there and literally watch George go over every coin. We will *definitely* do that if we choose to go see him.

Don't forget what a "good, honest" dealer might pay you versus what you would get listing them on ebay might be a 50%-100% difference.

Neil - good point. We asked about that - I believe my actual words were "how on earth does this guy make money if he pays "full value"? - and we were told that he does so much volume that he can afford to make only a very small markup - around 1% to 2%.

I'm not trying to , but if he works alone,I don't see how he could look at enough coins etc... by himself to make a good or fair profit, IF he is in fact looking at large collections, I'm assuming he may scan for key-dates first, keep us infomed

Definately catalog and photograph your coins. If you have any interest in coins and have the time, us this opportunity to learn about them. Its ok to let someone look over your collection and give their opinion but remember, opinions are different for everyone. Always be present and pay attention as the person looks through your collection. Not saying that your guy isn't honest, its better to put in the time and be safe than sorry. Best of luck to you and dont forget to keep us informed on how its going. If you get questions throw up some of your coins on here and let the CCF experts have a look.

stream41, I don't know George Dysinger or what you have in your collection, so I'll limit my comments to what I do know ... the business of buying and selling coins. When a "dealer" purchases your bulk collection it is done at the "wholesale" level. When you liquidate it yourself to other collectors it is at the "retail" level. The difference can be substantial. The effort to do this yourself can also be substantial and that is why many choose to have someone do it for them. What I would recommend is providing a summary list of your holdings to the forum and let us inform you which are the "fast movers". Those coins that with a little effort can produce a large retail return. Our service is free and our level of expertise is substantial. You could then attempt to sell these yourself through many outlets (EBay, auction houses, etc). Oh btw

A friend of mine had a similar situation, lots of coins/currency to be inventoried, and he videoed the entire transaction, and had the dealer verbally describe (date/mint mark/condition/distinguishing marks/etc...) each coin/currency and then show the item to the camera as an archive of the transaction. It went very well.

The videotaping is a great idea - I will ask George about that. So far we've received two good references for him, so that's a good start. We'll keep exploring other options as well. My wife has talked to Heritage, but their requirements seem a bit strict. Someone also mentioned the Forum's classifieds - that's a great idea that I didn't even think about. We'll be out of town this weekend, but we'll try to post a rough outline of the collection early next week. There's just so much there!

It has been my experience that if you sell the coins individually (especially keys, semi-keys, and those we simply don't have) you would get more for them than you would selling them as a group. You could see the remaining items as a group (Commons, and junk {no offense}). The members of this forum have been more than fair whenever someone posts an item for sale. Would you take a few pictures and let us see whatcha got before you had them off to your cosigner?

I see Mr. Dysinger just opened a retail establishment in Tulsa the end of January this year. You might want to drift in and browse and see what the lay of the land is first.
