I finally unwrapped my roll of GW Pres dollars, my bank teller saves me some things and this and one other roll she gave me (sold me) were in mint wrappers.

I can see know that mint wrapped coins tend to have all the same markers on them - this roll has what I think was brush marks around 3/4 of the obv. in the same pattern - some lighter - some stronger but this is the only one I found that had this done to the die. (at least I think it was done to the die)

So if I am thinking properly today - for this to have happened, the die would have had to be filled in, some of the sideburns are gone, some of what I will call his turtleneck is gone and a bit of the hair. All these areas would have been recessed into the die for it to show them raised after striking. And then there is what looks to be gouge or file marks in a east, west direction.

I am sure this will be an easy answer for most of you - I would like to know - if possible - what might have happened for the mint to do this and does it fall into the die variety category.

Whatever it is I think it is cool and will keep it - Just want to label it correctly before putting away.

If anyone would like to see the markers I am talking about that is on every coins obv., let me know and I will start another post.

No, it does not qualify as a die variety. That term is reserved to those anomalies that were on the die when it was first hung to mint coins, and is on the die throughout its life.

A die error is something that is done to the die or happens to the die during production that shows on the coins from that point forward. Die cracks, Cuds, polishing, gouges, etc. are all die errors of some degree or another. What you have there is a die error. I'm not certain exactly what caused it, but it's a gouge/scrape in the die which took away some of the detail on the die. No real premium value, yet a curiosity all the same.

Of course then again the 3-legged buffalo is technically NOT a variety...it's a minor die error that got a LOT of publicity. But that fact falls on deaf ears of more than 90% of the collecting community.

The basic fact remains, though - the die that created the 3-legged buffalos was very likely a completely normal die when it struck its first coin. The polishing that removed the leg was done at some point later on...thus a die error - NOT a die variety.
