Bought a small lot of these Phil./U.S. centavos. This one sort of stood out. Imagine how long ago this was done.(daydreaming)So worn, it certainly was done long ago. A '28M,btw

fioti- Yes, it is amazing what people have done to coins over the years out of boredom or in an attempt to create folk art. Who knows, this could have been someone's lucky centavo or pocket piece for a long time.

I have seen reeds cut into the edge of coins for many reasons. I have even seen teeth tooled into a US Large Cent so it would substitute for a gear - but I am always suspicious of intent when shallow reeds are added to a low denomination coin.

Are there any traces of silvering? This could be a quick and crude attempt to make a centavo pass as a higher denomination. Perhaps mixed in with 20 centavo coins that did have reeded edges?

Or am I too suspicious of people's motives?
