I recently noticed the edge on this half is different than what it says in the RedBook. I'm a metal detectorist, not a numismatist and would appreciate any help you all could provide. The edge appears to read "FIFTY CENTS OHALF A DOLLAR" How does this affect the coins value?

Yes, that would place the coin in the error category, but the added value of such an error should be minimal. The CBH variety book by Overton lists about five dozen different edge lettering variations and there must be countless others. They are not uncommon by any means, but if your intentions are to sell, I would recommend playing up this error in spelling.

then only ones (that I am aware of) that had a real premium are those with the edge lettering:
1) missing;
2) doubled, that is put on twice.

Value really depends on how much overlap there is of the two halves of the legend. Two or three letters is not that uncommon and doesn't really raise the value but you start getting four, five, six letters or more of overlap and the value starts going up. What you have is just a one letter overlap.

alon mentioned he/she's a metal detectorist, not a numismatist -- that sequed into an assumption that this coin may have been found while detecting.
