Hello everybody, Thanks for the compliments ! I do think these turned out rather nice (better than the photograph implies). ndgoflo, thanks for the order, I mailed it today (along with several other orders) ! PS: I'm just getting started. Look for a lot more interesting issues in the coming months. State Quarters, a tantalum medal, a Nikola Tesla sesquicentennial medal, a Zebulon Pike expedition 200th anniversary medal, and ? Some of it I hope to have on display at my Denver ANA table in August (that will be my big "debut").

These kind of put those designs that I have seen for the San Francisco Mint to shame. Why is it so hard for the US Mint to come up with the idea of using someone who can produce these kind of designs and for once turn out respectable coins. Very sad!

Hello Mr. Carr, I am honored to be able to personally thank you for creating such a beautiful design. I saw your post across the street about the gold version. I wish that I could have afforded one of those, but I am having a hard enough time trying to keep up with everything else that I have going. When I found that you had silver versions available there was no doubt in my mind that I would have to own one!! You have several other designs on your website that I would like to have someday as well, I'm sure that I'll be back! I agree with OldDan in the opinion of this Denver Commemorative being much more attractive than the proposed San Francisco designs. It would be nice to see coins as beautiful as this issued by the Mint. Someday maybe the Mint will truly recognize your artist ability and creative talent. I believe that "Chief Engraver Daniel Carr" would have a pleasant ring to it.

Daniel, are you designing the Pike medal that the Colorado Springs Pioneer Museum is supposed to be selling later this summer during the Pike's Peak festivities?

No. I saw a picture of that medal (or an illustration of it). I'm doing one completely on my own.

Wow, thanks! I don't think the current US Mint sculptors/engravers would like that idea (a new guy coming in with no seniority running the show). But I guess that happens all the time in the government. Anyway, I've applied to the Mint on four separate occasions when they had openings for sculptors/engravers/artists, but I never got a call. In June of 2005 they announced an opening for a "medallic artist". Qualifications included knowledge of computer technologies and digital sculpting (I wrote my own digital sculpting software). So I sent an application with the 3D samples they requested. I never received a single reply of any kind, and they still have my 3-D samples. So, for now, I'm free to design and mint whatever I desire (and that is hard to beat).

I have always liked Daniel Carr's work. Even though I think the Nevada Statehood Quarter is outstanding, I would have prefered the one Daniel proposed. He does great work.

Thanks, I will post here at this site when the Pike medals are done. That will be a few months since I haven't even designed it yet. The Tantalum medal will be very expensive, for four reasons: 1. I spent over two months sculpting it (off and on). 2. The tantalum-coated planchets are coated in Europe and they cost $250 each. 3. Production will be limited to 20 or less of each type. 4. It will be a large 3-inch medal, a special press and dies are needed. Tantalum is a very hard metal. It is impossible to coin solid tantalum with any kind of decent relief, especially in a large diameter size. So these will be pure copper coated with tantalum. Tantalum can not be plated onto other metals using traditional techniques (it has an extremely high melting point and it is practically impervious to all acids). But it is somewhat ductile and completely non-toxic (it is used in some body implants). Here is a teaser image of part of the reverse. The obverse, if it turns out as planned, will be really amazing. I'll just say that there will be two versions - "PG" and "R" rated.

I think I see the part of LIBERTY there and the sign on the bottom of the hilt is your sign trademark?
Awesome, can't wait to see it!
