I am currently living and working in the United Arab Emirates for a few years.
Wondered if any one of the forum members have been out this way and doing some MD here?
Cannot find any laws on MD, I am "scared" as here is a lot of different laws than most countries, I do believe the area where I am is rich in gold and yewellery from the Spice and Silk traders on the camel routes and would like to hit the trials in the dessert as well as the old Oasis sites.

My understanding is that there isn't any nationwide law or regulatory authority covering antiquities in the UAE; each emirate basically does it's own thing. For example, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi appear to both be militantly against foreigners looting their cultural heritage (and going out metal detecting would probably be seen as "looting" in their eyes), while Dubai seems to be pretty lax about the whole issue.

I would carefully check with both the federal authorities and the authorities in the specific emirate you plan to search in, before doing anything. I would also suggest carefully checking the laws regarding export of antiquities, to find out if you're allowed to take anything you find with you when you leave the UAE. We wouldn't like to be reading an article like this about you.

That's sound like a great adventure, let us know how it went if you'll end up doing that.

Thanks for the reply all.
I do have a few months to research legalities as first phase of Summer has now arrived and the heat is up to 45 degrees and 80% humidity, so the rubber duck is going to have to just sit for a few months.
