Hello! Everyone,

I am new here. I could like to ask some questions. My father-in law in China has some Chinese fat man yuan shih kai silver dollar coins. He would like me to bring to US for grading. Can anyone please recommend me a good grading agency for these coins? How to submit them and insure them during the shipping? How much are these coins worth generally if they are not fake. Your answers are greatly appreciated.
Rest in Peace

"... if they are not fake."

If there's any way that he can determine that these oft-counterfeited coins are NOT fake before he sends them, he'd save a lot of time and money.

Welcome to Coin Community, svbtkle. You raise an interesting subject.

Fat Man Dollars were struck in the millions, over many years and in many places. Some were struck by warlords in varying silver content, and they were widely counterfeited as well. Some of these counterfeits are good enough to fool all but the closest inspection by an expert.

The first test for authenticity is a magnet - if the coin sticks, it's obviously not real. Weight is another test, although not a certain indicator - the Standard Catalog states 26.4g as the appropriate weight. Strike quality can be a telltale, as well - look for mushy and/or missing details. Have a look here, the second coin down:

he might want to contact local dealer and find if they are real first, then Maybe he can ship them to you (assuming you're in the US) and then you can simply walk them in a coin show. (the grading companies usually take coins in major coin shows)

In any case you might want to contact the grading companies directly, here are the only 3 companies I would use (depend on the value mostly)
http://www.pcgs.com/
http://www.ngccoin.com/
http://www.anacs.com/

am not sure of the potential value of those, but roughly it coast some $20 a piece to grade, so make sure the value is there first.

Coin dealers can also handle the process for you.

Thanks. everyone. My father in law is also a collector for coins and paper money. He spent thousand of dollars on coins collection. I will ask him to send some coins to me and bring it for grading. Is it easier to bring to dealer or just send it to PCGS. He would like to have grading done by PCGS since his friend received their services before. Does anyone know the value if they are real?

In China, the collector market is crazier than the stock market. That, with the thousands of fakes, he has to stay careful.

What city is he in?

I checked the pcgs website.PGGS requires membership to submit the coins. The closest dealer is about 2 hours drive from where I live. Are these dealer trustworthy? How do they handle the process? Do they charge you to handle the process? Which way is better to submit the coins? Your answers are greatly appreciated.

Thats probably a bad idea to do that, unless hes an absolute expert (you know, given the nature of the number of fakes in China, particularly of Chinese coins)

Are there six or seven characters above the head? How is the edge decorated? (vertical reeding, slanted reeding, circles, alternating T's, or plain) Values differ significantly depending on the number of characters and the edge.
