I recall seeing somewhere on here that the 2006 no mint mark magnetic penny is fairly scarce. I can attest to that - I just found one after going through my 15th box. How "in demand" or valuable is this variety? |

Mintage is 'unknown'. Too bad about the scratch on the forehead but still a definite keeper. ebay sells MS-60 for $50 - $80. I think yours is "MS-63 scratches" Edited by laconic

Congratulations splatto -- yours is very nice. I found one after about 2-3 boxes. It was actually fairly liberating -- it made me quit rolls (for now)!
Now the bad news... my (hopefully wrong) guess is that these will drop in value. I don't think the supply is as small as everyone thinks. How else can you find a $100 coin by simply sorting through a bunch of change? For comparison, you still can buy 2006-P cents or 1991 quarters for under $10. I have yet to find any in circulation (though others have). The 2006 magnetic just seems too good to be true at that price. I mean you could almost go into business looking for them. It's by FAR the most expensive item I've found roll-searching. Next best would be a 64 xwl nickel.
On the other hand, I am also worried the demand will lighten. We have way too many composition/mm varieties. Some even call this a planchet "error", rather than a variety. It wasn't on my "to-buy" list until I stumbled across it. Who would buy one when you can have fun looking for one?!

I've gone through, easily, 15 boxes of cents since April and have only found one. Another thread stated that in 50,000 rolls, he found 5 of these and only 2x 2006P. It's easily the most expensive coin I've found as well.
I'm not too worried if the value seems to come down. I'm not selling mine as it fills what was a very important hole in my post centennial cent collection. With the sheer number of cents out there, plus the absolute ugliness of about 25% of the cents from 2006, in concert with the hoarding of cents by non collectors, I'm not too worried about the price dropping. I've found four 1991 quarters in only 9 boxes (and quarter boxes have 500 coins fewer than cent boxes). I would say my above cent find around box number 9 was well ahead of where statistics state I should have found it.
Troy, I don't have a magnet. I taste each coin to determine if it is magnetic or not. I guess using a magnet to determine magnetism would be easier.

I have a magnet I use. It is much better 'tasting. LOL Now the lack of coins, even more the lack of boxes of Canadian coins, (any denomination), makes it a real small chance of findinf much ot anything, but, I check everyone, as a matter of course. I would love to see boxes of Canadian cents , available in the US. I have swapped rolls of US for Canadian cents, but the cost id much higher for you folks, north of the border, than for us, and then there is the time delay. We have the "flat-rate boxes, that will hold three US cent boxes handily, and I suspect would also hold three Can. cent boxes. The rub is in the shipping costs. The time can fe set aside, by doing something else while waiting In reference to the boxes, foe example, I ask the guy on the East coast to send me three boxes of cents. I send him $100.00 He gets the boxes, and does the handling, etc, and pays the shipping, then keeps the change, (for the "leg-work". It works fine. now if I could find a way to do the same with Canadian cents, it would help a LOT od collectors, on both sides of the border. back to the mag/nonmag. aspect. I have about10-15 rolls od the 2006, and have gone thru them first with the mgnet, and visually, later to sort into the different varieties. I still have an empty tube marked 2006, no MM, magnetic. maybe it is not the one I mean, but it is not present, so it is an indicator of scarcity. I hope I haven'y "strayed" too far in ths thread. I think I may be the other member mentioned in the previous posts. Since October of 2009 to date I have searched aprox 47 boxes of pennies. Works out to be around 117,500 cents checked. Give or take a few thousand more checked from work. I have managed to find 5 of the 2006 Magnetic no mint marks and 2 of the 2006P cents. I have had a lot of fun roll searching. For my original $25 investment I have managed to keep aprox 1500 cents...both Canadian and US. I Usually keep anything 1959 and under...unless it is in rough shape. I keep 60 and above if they are in nice condition. I try to check each coin with a loupe for any errors and variety. I managed to find my first 2 US WAM's from my last 2 boxes of Canada cents. I really enjoy the hobby and always learn something new. I'm not looking to get rich...just looking for a hobby that keeps my interest and does not annoy the wife. :) Well...I'm off to search for my next great find. Have fun all and happy hunting. |

splatto tasting coins:  cladhunter:  I'm glad you both seem to agree with me (regarding your stats) that the 2006P seems scarcer, BUT it's the one easily available in sets. Maybe they produced a few hundred thousand of each. |

Anyone find a 2006P Non-Magnetic? They are even rarer. (not to be confuded with the 2006P magnetic with a mintage of 200,000)

That would be the 6th variety of the 2006 cent coin. I haven't yet passed one with a P composition mark but I'm hoping :)
