Hello,

I recently found this coin and have no idea where it is from and whether or not it is authentic. It is dated 1724, but that is the only text that is legible.

Hard to tell from the photos, but it looks like a cast fantasy piece to me and not a real coin. The letters that I can read form groups of nonsense.

It appears to be a 4 tari coin of the Order of Malta (similar to KM# 170), but it does look somewhat crudely fashioned, with several of the letters mis-shapen. See this website, particularly this example.

It's possible it's a jeton with a design based on the coin. Is it made of brass? And what's the diameter? it could be another denomination entirely, such as an imitation of a gold 2 or 4 zecchino.

Thanks for the info.
I would guess it was not authentic, because it was found amongst some coins my boyfriend's grandmother gave to him for his trip to Europe.
The coin is 25mm in diameter. I don't know what the material is, but it is silver in color (more silver than the photos make it out to be). There are some small differences between it and the from the website you posted (no T 4 on the back around the crest/coat of arms) The text is worn away, but appears to be the same as in the photo on the website.
