Hi,
what do you think - original or 18-century counterfeit?
The coin is 28 mm/ 8.2 grams.

Weight and size probably say :- wrong. If it's genuine, then it is better than anything I've handled; and certainly better than any I own

I also think it is an imitation but can someone tell where I can see images of original coin in high quality?

I don't know, the example I found on the Irish Coins website looks about just like yours but in better grade. The effigy looks somewhat stylized but that's how it was on their coin.

1775 should be the 3rd type (long hair). Also the nose is not quite right.
I still lean towards contemporary counterfeit.

Mostly I see the difference in style of lettering but I don't have any literature to check whether there were any varieties.

Nope. I borrowed the images from Heritage Auctions - this coin sold for a tad over $400 last month. ANACS MS63.

Thanks for the help; I think that my coin is 18-century fake, receive with another "metal detecting finds" from UK.

bobo13- Very nice! Don't think that your coin is worthless just because it is a fake. Some contemporary counterfeits can be worth more than real examples. And I think that British half pennies often fall into this category. Congrats!

It is a counterfeit, and there are several of us who do collect these. 1775 is a better date for a counterfeit Irish.
