Just kidding! But I was thinking, For my "US Type Set" I don't know if I want to use a Dansco. Sure they are good looking, but it seems like every old danso I ever see seem, musty and discolored. Sure its probably just that its made of older materials when storage options were misinformed and nor plentiful. And then there's the whole sliding plastic scratching issue. I know for me I'm planning on putting upwards of 20k in to my type set... and that's just before adding in 18th century strikes and gold. But I also like the idea of having free range on what I determine to be part of MY Type set. And being able to easily continue into the 21st century with out waiting on a vendor. I was looking at http://www.valleycoin.com/index.php?cPath=300_561And was thinking sure it may be a bit bulky, but I could offer the safety and stability I'm looking for, with the customization, and the beautiful display. My question is has anyone used one of these albums for holing their air-tites? What do you like / Dislike. Sorry if this was already asked somewhere.

For really high-end coins, I really like the Air-Tites. Considering your goal, I somewhat like your idea. However, in defense of Dansco Albums, my oldest ones are now over 25 years old. I did replace the binders on the three oldest ones about 15 years ago because I was less careful in my youth. However, the coins have held up well, the pages have held up well, and the binders (since I stopped treating them as if they were bullet proof) have held up well.

Yea, No doubt Dansco's are quality. However One thing I like about doing it this way is I can have a separate place for Modern proofs, and Also include Modern Silver Proofs for Side By Side.
I'm still working the numbers on how best to segment them all. One album holds six pages. By my count it will take me at least 3 albums to hold every thing. But that's just for perfect fit, not considering all cents together, followed by all 5 Cents, etc. So we will see. I may break it up by Century, like on album for each. Or just do it as Cent - 5 Cent, 10 Cent - 25, 50c - dollar, etc.
Gotta decide my full list of what I am going to consider for my type set.
I do have to say, I'm liking the uniqueness of this.

I have to agree. No rules but your own! I must add that my coins are far from high-end. With the exception of the modern proof, NIFC, and post-1980 business strike coins, most are in the middle grades. If I ever decided to do a high-end set of anything (especially something that included high-end classic types), I would seriously consider using Air-Tites.

Yea thats about where I'm at. When I was talking to my dealer / mentor he strongly urged my that if I'm going to put actual money into a set of any kind, do it right the first time, don't compromise, be patient and wait for the right coin, and never buy anything expensive off of ebay :P

Quote: ...do it right the first time, don't compromise, be patient and wait for the right coin... That sounds like good advice to follow. I am not into doing upgrades. Once I fill a hole, I plan to keep that coin there forever. If I were to start a high-end set, it would most definitely be an exercise in patience!

This is how I plan to do mine, as I get the coins for the Type Set, I put them in air-tites, and for right now, I keep them in in 20 slot 2X2 sheets. I have a current album with the halves and a few of the Type Coins. I just haven't figured out the final layout... when I do I'll order the pages for the album.

I bought one of those air-tite albums for a set of silver eagles I had a while back. I had the set in air-tites already and figured it would look pretty sharp. Maybe it was the weight of the coins but every time I opened the thing several would fall out of the holes. The pages were awkward to handle and I just wasn't very happy with the look of it all. I loved the look of the coins in the air-tites, the ring setting off the coins and all, but the album was very dissapointing.

I have a complete set of roll issued ( no mint mark) Silver Eagles and I haven't experienced any problems with the coins coming out. The only difference I can see is that mine are in direct fit air-tites not the ring type. The ring type are a little larger but I don't know if that would make the difference.

I also like the way BadThad does his Lincoln cents, putting the Air-Tites in a cardboard 2x2 to keep the coin centered in the pocket. It looks great with the small Lincoln cents. With larger coins, I do not think the 2x2 would be necessary.

Yea, I spent yesterday afternoon figuring out the layout, page by page and I got the whole thing into 3 albums. The last two pages are just commem halves and commem dollars, so I figure I have wiggle room as I need to expand.
I was gonna have room for all the 1700 issues.. but realized it wouldn't all fit properly, so I just went from 1800-date. I figure after I complete this, I can do a separate book for 1700's and a separate book for Gold. When I get hom ill upload the list I made, It includes coin sizes, a breakout of what page size, and what size holders for each coin.
Maybe that wioll help you out coinaholic. Only ended up being just over $110 for all three books, pages, and capsules. There are one or two capsules ill have to modify but 95% of them will fit perfectly.

I really like Danscos but with high end coins I think the protection of an air-tite album is well worth the cost.

I've been doing a lot of the back work to starting this set, I'm currently putting pen to paper on what I consider to be acceptable grades for me and the most I'm willing to pay for a given grade. Makes it easier to pass when over priced, and easier to compromise when it's "the perfect coin" but priced a little over my target. I've technically only bought 3 coins so far for this set, and I've been "working on it for a month or so now. An MS-64/65 1944 Walker, an MS65 Steel Lincoln, and a Very Beautifully toned MS-65 1950-D Jefferson (got it for $3 from my dealer. He said the good deal was so he didn't have to card it, walk over, and put it in the case. LOL) I'm thinking once I get the album and capsules I will be making a lot more purchases... But I have to balance my budget with buying a couch this month.

So heres a break down of how I'm doing mine. Granted its a work in progress and some of you may want to do it differently, thats fine, this is my type set. I'm just hoping this saves you a few hours of figuring and reasoning.
If nothing else its a ton of good info.
