I have a chance at acquiring a 1886 Cameo Proof. Should I snag it? I am primarily a copper collector, but have a budding interest in type coins. I have always liked the Three Cent Nickel. I figure this might be one of those opportunities that you make the purchase (even though the funds might not be there), and feel great about it later on once the funds have been paid back. Thoughts. Prethen, if you are around, I would like your opinion on this date. Thanks! Chris

Quite the contrary. 3CN's can be had as very nice proofs indeed, and they're reasonably priced. An 1886 PF65CAM should run a little over $500; they're selling for about $550 at Heritage. Eagle1, my only worry would be that the coin is reasonably priced and in a reputable slab. This isn't one I'd buy raw, except from a very few dealers.

1886 3CN, NGC PR67CAM, courtesy of Heritage Auctions: Heritage has records of over 60 sales of 1886 3CN Proofs in CAM. There are DCAM 3CN Proofs, too.

Quote: Any idea on a mintage of the cameo? Well, Heritage has records of 6399 sales of Proof 3CN's. Of that total, 1664 are CAM and 136 are DCAM. I would expect this percentage to be slightly skewed to disproportionally represent CAMs - they seem to me to be a more "sellable" variety and might therefore be offered for sale more often than non-CAM Proofs. It's not unreasonable, though, to conclude that 10% or more of 3CN Proofs are CAM or DCAM.
