This may be a question I end up looking silly for asking,
but here it goes anyway.I bought a 1974 proof set
that I paid $8.00 for,and I also bought a 2005 mint
set that I paid $20.00 for.Why is the mint set higher
than the older proof set?Aren't they both clad?I didn't
get these from the same place.Any education about proofs
and mint sets will be appreciated.Thanks,sn31

here is one guess for you. If you look back at older mint sets you will find the same thing as you are finding with the proof sets. that is the cost to buy them is very cheep for both the mint and proof. if you look at the 1999-2006 mint and proof set you will find all of them exept the 2002 have gone up alot in value mint or proof.

The other reson the 2005 mint set is a little higher is that in 2005 the mint started minting the mint sets in a Satin finish so also that year I beleave will contunie to climb in value. I also think with all the new collector including me that have started since the State Quarters that the older proof set will start to go up in value you soon.

that is one of the reason I am starting to collect all of the proof sets from starting with 1960-2006 after I get that complete I will someday work my way bakc further. but with that said more them 3/4 of the proof sets from 1998 back to 1961 can be bought for less then 15.00 alot less then 8.00

so I hopethis helped alittle I know there are other who will have beter answer that is just what I see the ones proof and mint set with State Quarter have more in them and are more sout ofter right now

Hi sn31

1974-S Proofset 2,612,568

2005 P&D Mint set 1,160,000

Less than half the mintage with a much bigger collector base,, Remember the Nickels !!

You'll see many anomylies like this as you look deeper into coins. There are many cases where the scarcer coin is worth much less than common coins. Look at the relative mintages and prices for the 1883 V-nickels.

Prices of coins are set by supply and demand. There is a strong tendency for Proof coins to be saved and BU coins to be spent. With many of the moderns proofs there is simply not enough demand to absorb the surviving supply so the price stays low.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.
