I ran into a couple of coins in PCGS holders that were marked genuine but had no grade. The last I heard coins that were cleaned, fakes, etc. were body-bagged and sent back so I was wondering what kind of situation would have to occur to get that kind of label. Why would they mark them as genuine but not stick a grade on them?
Sometimes a dealer or just a collector will request a coin just be slabbed without grading. It's less expensive to do so but it can also cover problems. For example. If I had a pricey coin that I knew had problems I may just want to send it in to be authenticated for resale and not have the problem accentuated.I wouldn't do that but some would.A fake coin would not be slabbed by any reputable TPG company.
Now there is something that might be fun to try but a little expensive. Send in a coin to a TPGS and request they slab it, no grade, no authentication, no title except their name. Or just a Real coin title. Or a this is a fake title.
