jprine Pillar of the Community United States 1599 Posts	Posted 06/06/2010 5:19 pm Bought this yesterday. I really liked the errors on the reverse, there are multiple missing parts of the letters. There are a whole bunch of RPD's in that series - perhaps yours is one of them, making the numbers look fatter once worn. I saw similar while looking at these at Heritage before posting this reply. Conder101 Bedrock of the Community United States 17884 Posts	Posted 06/07/2010 10:23 am Those are what are known as hub breaks. Those portions of the letters have broken off the raised letters on the hubs used to make the dies. With no raised area on the hub, there is no depression in the die and so no raised area on the finished coin. The Shield nickel is WELL known for these broken letters. I think the record is something like seven broken letters on one coin. The are especially popular on the 1868 hub of 68 nickels. (1868 come from three different rev hub designs.) All of the hub of 68 dies came from just one master hub and it is possible to trace the deterioration of the hub as one letter after another develop breaks Report this Post to the Staff

While I've spotted many a die break on Shield nickels, I've not noticed any partial lettering such as yours illustrates. Makes me think I need to look at coins with a more studious eye! The most such glaring nickel I've found is a 1912 liberty that has eleven stars; arguably 11.3 stars. That nickel is far more eye-catching to me than a three-legger.
