I recently came across a 1906 Liberty nickel. The coin has all of the detail remaining. (Full liberty, hair lines, ear, etc.) The problem is in the top left of the obverse has a weird green colored substance on it, and is dark on the other side. Is there anything I can do to help this coin or should I just leave it as is?

Pictures would help. It sounds like your talking about verdigris or PVC. Normally we would never recommend cleaning, but acetone might help with PVC.

As mentioned, it's either PVC or verdigris, most likely the latter.

See my sig for removal assuming it's verdigris.
