I just called the main branches of several banks here in downtown Toronto inquiring about fifty cent pieces. They all said they don't/can't order and buy them with the exception of one bank. This bank said they get the coins from time to time and I'm welcome to buy them when they come in, but I have to visit to see if they have any, which they usually don't.
So here's my predicament. I'm an album collector and only have about a half dozen half-dollars (98, 99, 2002P(1952-), 67, 77, 76). I hate having to pay $1.50 - $2.50 each for these - I'd rather get these at a more reasonable price so I have more money to buy some older pieces once I get everything post centennial.
I'm not even concerned about varieties or anything else at this point.
Does anyone have any idea on how I can get the more recent pieces or am I stuck buying from dealers?

Well that's the thing, they aren't in bank circulation so those of us buying and holding rolls aren't giving them away. It typically costs me 2x face or often better to buy rolls that are definitely uncirculated (I've been buying one roll for each year btw). I see dealers sell handfulls of them cheap, but they have been so badly banged up there's no chance of getting a gem. These are definitely worth collecting. At a live auction the "stored in bag" variety usually bring a couple bucks in live bidding. Having said that, I see a guy on ebay often puts on ranges of years and they sometimes go for a buck apiece but usually do better.

The once I paid around $2 for are PL-BU pieces. Reading between the lines, I guess you're saying that's a decent price to avoid shipping costs and to be in possession of them at point of sale?
I'm going to Torex this month. Generally how bad is "stored in bag" ?

Well PL BU pieces dominate the last ten years or so of course, but definitely strive for gem/ near gem pieces in mint state where possible because they are still not expensive really. I mean the mint is selling coloured quarters for 10 bucks, shelling out 10 for a graded in holder gem 50 cent piece doesn't seem bad at all.
The stored in bag stuff isn't worth buying in my opinion. They might achieve an MS 60 but usually they can only hit an AU just because of being mishandled.
I guess it depends what you want. I'll hunt new rolls just to find one gem/super gem because I won't settle for less. If you're OK with average then I'd say you should be able to fill all the years for a buck.
I've also said before that those Mint gift sets with coloured quarters are IN SOME YEARS actually standard circulation strikes and are really really gently handled. For example the 2006/07/08 congratulations sets give you pretty much pristine samples of six coins plus a coloured quarter you can dump to almost entirely recoup the expenditure. In some cases I've gotten more for the quarter than I paid for the set.

I thought any of the PL BU pieces would be gem or near gem. They've got to be at least MS-63ish with the odd exception, no?

No, they are not business strike (mint strike) they are numismatic brilliant uncirculated. Charltons labels them as MS6x NC (non circulated) or SP or PR (specimen or proof). Some years proofs or specimens are valuable in high grades (1969/1970) but in most years standard circulation strikes are the cat's uh... pajamas.
I always get the very best I can in MS then I consider anything I add from non circulating coinage as almost a separate endeavor.

I bought a sealed mint roll of the 1952-2002, I guess I had a weak moment, because I really don't like them. I carefully transfered them to 2x2's and by the time I was done, I was sick of looking at them. You give me your address and I'll mail you one. Next time you see one of those charity change jars at the store, drop a loonie in and we'll call it even.

25 cent piece - I just looked at my 2002 (1952-) P coin today and it's fairly dinged up, since I got it from circulation. I'd like to take you up on your offer but I'm unable to email you through the forum. Can you please email me by clicking the link at the top of this post? Thanks :)

I get mine from dealer friends at face value and most are BU, but with bag dings and probably in the 60-3 range. I give them a tips, along with nickel dollars to the paper carriers and bar girls.
