I was at a coin store at lunch and saw in a jewel case a 1964 nickel with "XWL" marked on the 2x2. I looked at it and I couldn't see it.
I asked the dealer and he said it's not *the* variety, it's a variety of the variety. He suggested to me to leave it be for now, until more information is known about it.
Has anyone else heard of this variety-variety?

It's likely some early stage of the die deteriorating.

That's what I thought. I wasn't actually able to see the xwl from my quick search, but next time I'm there I'd like to see if he will let me take a picture of it.

I'd be very interested in seeing this. I stopped saving '64's when I got a coffee can full.

I need to stress that this is NOT the coin I initially created the topic about. I still have not been back to the dealer to check that coin out or take pictures. However this past weekend when I was cooped up at home avoiding the G20 madness, I found this coin with an XWL in a roll. It's not the variety, but seems to be a variety-variety:

I made it back to the coin store at lunch today. Turns out his XWL stands for Extended Water Lines (they run almost into the denticles). Mine does have an XWL that runs into the KG, and not the typical water line known for the variety.

Looks like a die crack. The placement on the coin is too high to be the origin of the XWL, but
still interesting.
