Hey all! =)

I picked up a few from ebay the other day, and I'm pretty happy with my purchase... But I'm having a hard time with identification - even though I'm trying pretty hard.

I should probably look to pick up a book - any suggestions?

So this one, I'll start with, I'm pretty sure is real. It's also been the toughest for me to identify:

My best guess is Constantius? It's really tough to tell because the reverse (victor spearing downed horseman) was used by a lot of emperors at a lot of mints!
edit: Oh - I forgot to mention - initially I thought this was Arcadius because of the three knots flying from the back of the head on obverse - but I was told I was probably wrong.

This one is Constantius, but I don't think it's real. What do you think?

Not sure what the goo is. Looks like it may have been glue?

And this one - the one I was most excited about - appears to be a version of the Bar Kokhb revolt coinage. Unfortunately, it looks and feels completely like a cheap tourist fake:

It's completely covered in some kind of shiny laminate or something.

Luckily, I paid $6 (including shipping) for all three! So I'm not out much, especially if the first is real! And this is all good cheap learning for me while I try to figure this stuff out.

Thanks for your help!

The first coin does appears to be Constantius II and the second one is Valens.

Valens! Shoot, you're right (of course) echi. I think I knew that and forgot. Do you reckon it's real?

The first two look genuine to me - not sure about the third though, the surface seems a bit pitted.

I dont know much about the third so dont take my word for it, wait for an expert.

The Valens coin was minted in Arelate/Constantina (PCON)- The glue looks like the coin has been sellotaped at some point.

Not sure where the fisrt was minted, think I can make out 'CON' so could be Arelate/Constantina or Constantinopolis?

The first two are real, I'm not sure about the third one.

I share your suspicions of the third one. I have one of these, a tourist copy; when I bought it, it still smelled of the plasticine they'd used to make the mould...

wow - so the Valens is real! That's awesome!!

The Bar Kokbha looks pretty fake to me, but it does *tink* like a metal coin. It doesn't look or feel metal; it's covered in resin that makes it look plastic.

Because of it's potential value ($30?) is it worth posting new pics? I admit my photos aren't very good there, I was getting used to a new set-up. For now, I was thinking about destroying or somehow marking it as a fake.

Thank you Sap, echizento, and bobbyshelmet! I sure appreciate your assistance!

Alright - at the risk of beating a dead horse (and frankly, just an excuse to try out my new photography set-up), here's the fake one more time. This one has been a GREAT learning experience (the story of the coin, what to look out for in a fake, and most recently, how to make my setup work to take decent pictures of resin covered coins! hee hee hee)

Your photography set-up is good

The coin is def a fake - still well worth your $6 for the other two though and the experience of researching them.
