Here is another fun one. 1858 Twenty Cents in Uncirculated condition. None of my guides mentions it. mycoincollecting.com goes off the deep end with the prices.

You guys have any ideas about it?

You mentioned you have Charltons... the Province of Canada coinage is present in the front of the book. In 2010 this coin is on page 42 subsection Province of Canada.

Nice details on your sample but lots of light scratching. I'd think it was rubbed or cleaned.

Thanks, found it. In my 2009 Charltons its on page 12. Listed at a more reasonable $35. You are probably correct about the cleaning. It looks too pristine for its age.

Would you know what its made of? It feels too light for silver.

Didn't know about the "Province of Canada" section. Also had my Queen Vic Large Cents. What is the history that changed the Province of Canada into the Dominion?

That describes briefly what was going on. The Dominion of Canada was formed in 1867 gaining nationhood.

It's made of silver, but it wasn't widely liked and we moved to a quarter that matched the US pretty fast.

I guess I didn't word my question correctly. If the Dominion of Canada was formed in 1867 why were Province of Canada coins still minted into the 20th Century?

They weren't. The other coins you see as 20 cent pieces were minted in what would be future provinces, such as Newfoundland.

Stunet, it's found on page 42 of both the 2009 and 2010 volume 1 guides. If it were MS-60, the book value is listed at $1100, but I don't believe it to be uncirculated. As far as "Province of Canada" coins, 1858 was the only year, but some provinces didn't join the dominion until much later than 1867. Newfoundland, for example, didn't join until 1949, hence the 1949 Canada Newfoundland dollar, and separate Newfoundland currency being issued up until 1947.

Thanks for the history lesson. Been in the US too long.

This is my book. Next month when I am visiting Vancouver I will get the 2011 fancy spiral bound one.

Oh I see, I just assumed you were referencing the spiral-bound version. I'm also looking forward to the 2011 issue. Looks like it will be both books this time though, I was surprised how many times I had to dig out the 2009 this year for NCLT information.

I have several of these 20 cent pieces , they are greatly undervalued. Despite the mintage in Charlton of 730,000 there are max 112000 as the rest were melted.
They should be more but maybe as they are pre 1867 they may have less interest. I think it is unique and feel no Victorian 25 cent set is complete without. I have never seen the 1870 piece I guess that It is specimen only.
