Most of what I see appears to be luster breaks rather than scratches; that being the case, I don't think 64 is out of the question. Which would make it in the upper level of known grades for VAM-16, if I'm correct in the attribution. Only 3 known in 65, although they're not really rare into MS condition. How strong is the doubling of LIBERTY? http://www.vamworld.com/1878-P+VAM-16

VAM-16 is what I thought it was as well. Here is the Liberty, am I correct in assuming that would be considered "strong" doubling?

I was considering sending this off for a grade. I thought it was undergraded when I bought it and only paid MS-61 money for it. Would you have it graded?

I agree I'm not seeing any scratches either, I would say MS-64. Nice doubling.

For a reasonable grading fee, I'd get it graded, if only to protect it from any further environmental/handling compromise.
The naturally-lit pictures lead me to an easy 63 with concern about the spot in the obverse east and the spots in the reverse west keeping me from 64.
Nice coin.

Not many hits at all. Just some contact marks. A very nice coin. At least an MS63. nlp
