Just got back from camping in the mountains. My computer doesn't work. Monitor is dark. I am writing this from the newspaper where I work part time. Hopefully I will be back on-line soon.

Maybe you should borrow a monitor and look if it is not solely the monitor that blew ?

Chances are that if the monitor is completely dark, then it is a monitor failure. Thankfully, you can buy terrific monitors these days for very little cash.
If it isn't the monitor, then perhaps your videocard is fried. That can also be replaced very cheaply. If fact, I have 4 of them gathering dust in my closet.
If it were your CPU or a montherboard problem, the monitor would still show something. In fact, it's really easy to tell if your monitor works by trying to adjust the settings, and seeing if the gui pops.
Buying new computers is always much fun, but if you find yourself doing so, buy a Mac :) If you can't buy an Apple though, please don't buy one of those cheesy pre-build HP Pavillions, Compaqs, or Dells...

Yeeeesh!! You might be buying the wrong wattage then. I've never heard of something like that! Maybe you have a component that is frying it somehow? I mean, that's just crazy! I've got 3 computers at my place that I run 24/7. One has been up for about seven years now (my old Pentium II webserver), and hasn't had anything go out. You can get amazing 500 watt power supplys very cheaply these days.

I have 3 here also and all stay on 24/7 but this one here which is a P4 3.2GHZ keeps frying them, well it hasn't done it in awhile but I have tried 650 watt ps and they still dont last very long

Yesterday my monitor was dark too. I had left the computer on for about an hour and went away, when I came back monitor was dark. Computer was on, monitor sleep light was on (yellow). I turned the monitor on and off with the button, light still yellow. Unplugged monitor and plugged back in, didn't help. Turned computer on and off, didn't help. Finally, unplugged monitor and unplugged computer and let sit for about 2 or 3 minutes. Plugged them back in and turned on computer. It worked, the monitor fired up. My next move was to go out and get the sledge hammer!

IF the system didn't go to sleep, AND the puter and vid card is okay, more than likely if it is a CRT type monitor, the high voltage prolly cr?pped out--IF so, the monitor is history, not worth fixin since crt types are sooo cheap now---(Make sure it is plugged in & the power cord is good!!& your absolutely sure it is gettting power) (without stickin yer finger into the outlet mind ya)) Then wack it couple times on the side, you would be surprised (LOL) CiScO

Well first it has happened several times my monitor staid asleep If I keep my computer switch on buttom pushes for 30 seconds I get a reset of the computer and that wakes my monitor I had a very noisy minifan on my graphics card I banged the computer very hard from right to left this shoved the fan away from the card and I am noisefree for more then a year now Of course I am an engineer that grew up when banging things still worked (like banging a stuck starter coil on a car )

Did you put a dusk cover over it before you went camping? I'm always knocking the cord loose on mine every time I take it off. It doesn't take much. Then I usually have the same thoughs like the one in Cisco's smilie except mine is a sledge hammer. But then when I check the cord it always comes back up. Thanks to you all for your thoughts.
I surely hope it's just the monitor, but here's why I don't think that's the case. When I boot up, or re-start, I alwys get the little bit of music telling me it is about done with the process, Now, when I try and re-boot or start it up, there's no sound, just the lights flashing on the CD and DVD holder. If it was just the monitor, wouldn't I still hear the music?
This computer has been great. It was built for me by my brother, who was a computer teacher at the high school level, and by my nephew, who works for a school district installing computers. However, if buy a new one, I'll get th extended warranty, and then should have too many worries for a few years.
If it is my CPU, what breaks my heart is that I didn't back up very much. On my "Word" procssing I have everything from financial information to historical rcords, to CCF stuff such as addresses.
Again, thanks.

Bought a new computer.
It's on the way.
Hopefully my old one will be fixable and I can use it as a back-up.
Thanks again for suggestions. If I find out what went wrong, I'll let everone know.
