Not certain about this coin. I am sure it is a piece of eight, but can anyone give me any additional information about it? I was told it came of the wreck of the El Cazador. Thanks.

Yes it is definitely a Mexico mint 8 reales showing Mo after the inscriptions IND.REX.
On the 2nd picture, seems a bust of Carolus III on the portrait side.

The El Cazador coins are very common and often show excessive corrosion. There are also numerous casts made with silver salvaged from the wreck. I would not invest a great amount over melt for any of these salvaged pieces.

I know this will not set well with collectors of wreck coins. But the track record of coins like this is NOT good.

Unfortunately it would be very tough to prove provenance on a coin like this. If you can make out a date it should be 1783. As far as I know all of the coins from this wreck had that date.

The Cazador gave up a lot of higher quality coins considering that they sat on the ocean floor for about 200 years. Higher quality 8 reales in NGC or PCGS holders can be had for about $100. I agree with Swamperbob that a coin in this condition probably doesn't demand much of a premium. It is still, however, a very cool collectors piece.
