The difference is that a planchet get stuck on the obverse die and strikes a second planchet. The reverse looks normal but the obverse may be almost obilterated or a larger image of the devices from striking through first planchet.
The first planchet sometimes falls off and looks like a cup:

The coins struck through a capped die will be normal on the reverse, but distorted on the obverse:

If the capped die doesn't fall off, it can deteriate and create another look:

Thanks to all who posted these images that I could store them for such an education. It really does help. I have many more images of things that have not been covered yet. Just waiting for the opportunity to do so.

By the way, I see capped die and generic capped die all the time. Is there a difference? Why generic?
