I came across this token recently and was wondering
if anyone had seen one like it or had an idea
who produced it.
The shape of the numbers and the wreath on the reverse
were what caught my attention. Thought it looked cool.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thank You

Terry

Don't have any books right now, but off-hand I'll take a shot at British railway.

There are a whole series of tokens I've seen here on the forum, all apparently from the USA, which have just a number, or a number and some denomination or mark of value ("5c in trade" or something similar).

This thread shows token number 1413 and also mentions tokens with numbers 460 and 3214. "About nickel sized".

Here's number 4461. It's half-dollar sized and made of bronze.

Here's number 21197. Also holed and bronze/brass.

Here's token number 30091, ditto.

I assume they're stock tokens; the token manufacturer would know the composition, size, thickness, weight etc they used when they made token class 4460, and if a customer wanted to order some more, they'd only have to quote the number and the manufacturer would know what to make.

I believe they used code numbers, rather than naming either the establishment they were used in or the token manufacturer, because the tokens were often used for somewhat shady dealings - such as gambling when gambling was illegal; code numbers would make it harder for law enforcement to track them down.
